The Georgian Christmas

Please note the topic of this talk has changed from the one on St Alphege advertised in Caretime. This is now due to take place in February.

Many believe how we celebrate Christmas today was invented by the Victorians due to the influence of Germany via Prince Albert. But it’s not true that the Georgian didn’t mark Christmas Day. Cathryn Spence, Abbey Curator, will introduce the rituals and traditions that were followed in the 1700s long before Dickens’ Scrooge or the arrival of the panto Dame. Christmas refreshments will be on offer!
