A dedicated supportive space for those looking after someone with dementia. It’s an opportunity to meet people in a similar situation, that understand what it's like to look after a friend or family member with dementia. Conversations vary at each session and are guided by an experienced facilitator. They are informal and relaxed, perfect with a cuppa and some biscuits!
There are lots of benefits to joining a Dementia Support Group. Explore our Carer Stories to hear from others who have joined the sessions. The support group provides dedicated time for you, away from your caring responsibilities. You can share your experiences, gain knowledge and peer support from others and meet wonderful people.
Yes! Our friendly team are on hand to help you access a support group. We can discuss any barriers you may have to joining a session like transport issues and care cover for your loved one.
To request a place, visit our website www.banescarerscentre.org.uk/wellbeing-activities or contact us on the details above. Due to high demand and limited availability you will join a waiting list in the first instance. We will respond to your request by email or phone.
If this is your first time joining us, you will receive a welcome call or email from a member of the team, they will discuss what to expect. Although every session is different, we have provided a brief outline.
Welcome and introductions.
The facilitator will start the session and help the conversation flow, providing everyone with the opportunity to talk and share.
After chatting away and listening to others, we’re sure you’ll lose track of the time so the facilitator will let you know when the café is nearing the end!
To help you get the most from the group we encourage regular attendance. We’ll send a reminder before each session and if you’re unable to make it due to illness, appointments or other commitments just let us know using contact details at the top of the page.
Commitment to this group is especially important as there is a waiting list for others who would benefit from the sessions. To ensure we operate fairly we regularly review attendance to ensure as many carers are benefitting from the sessions as possible.
We know joining a new group can feel daunting, but our sessions are a supportive and respectful space where you can get involved at your own pace. We encourage participants to be as honest as you are comfortable with, and anything shared within the group should remain within the group.
An experienced facilitator will be there to guide you, and you’ll soon get to know our friendly group. If you feel especially anxious and would like extra support, please contact us using the details at the top of the page.
It’s important that everyone is given a chance to contribute without interruption, and that whilst people are sharing that others are respectful, offering time and patience. There is no pressure to speak during a session, so if you’d prefer to sit back and listen, you can simply pass it on to the next person. In line with our values, it’s important we operate a supportive and empowering environment for all.
We want to ensure our group remains supportive and accessible for as many carers as possible. We understand that everyone’s caring journey is different and we don’t set a fixed number of sessions a person can attend. However we do want to ensure those who need the support the most, are able to access in a timely manner.
To manage a high demand, we review attendance regularly as a team, to ensure rolling availability. If we feel you are ready to move your attendance to another carer café we will always talk this through with you privately, offering support and plenty of notice to make the transition as smooth as possible to your next step.
Unfortunately, dogs are unable to join our groups and activities. This is necessary to respect venue terms and conditions, and to ensure all members feel safe and comfortable. Please do not bring your dog along to a group as this may result you being unable to participate in the session. If this creates a challenge for you, please give us a call to chat this through.
Our activities are FREE and this is important to us. If you would like to make a contribution towards an activity, you can do this by making a donation.
