Gayna's story

Gayna has three children, two of which have additional needs. She shares her experience as a parent carer.

Gayna looks after her twin daughters, who both have complex disabilities. For parent carers like Gayna, it can feel like there is no switch off button.

A parent carer is an adult who looks after a child with additional needs or a disability for whom they have parental responsibility.

It can be difficult for people to recognise themselves as carers. Especially when the person simply sees themselves as being mum, dad or a parent doing what they need to do for their child. However, identifying as a carer opens up opportunities to get valuable support.
