Working Together: Headway Bath and District

We are excited to be working alongside Headway Bath and District to reach and support carers in our local community who are looking after someone with an acquired brain injury. Collaborating with specialist services such as Headway enables is to bring together our knowledge and resources to better support people when they need it most.  It also ensures we can offer specific advice and signposting that is tailored to specific circumstances, thus maximising the impact we can have for carers.

Introducing Headway:

Headway Bath and District, are a local charity that supports individuals with an acquired brain injury, their families and carers.  They provide cognitive rehabilitation sessions via their day centre, personalised 1-1 support with their rehabilitation assistants and activities designed to increase independence and confidence following life changing injury.

At Headway they recognise that family members, who are also carers, have a need for support too.  Family Support Co-ordinator, Melissa Nash facilitates the Headway Carer Community Café once a month at The Carers' Centre.

She also visits patients and their families when they arrive in the RUH on the Neurological ward to offer emotional support and to act as a bridge between the patient, their families and staff.

Carers have expressed a need for someone to talk to who understands what both their loved one may be experiencing after their acquired brain injury, and the impact it may be having on the family.

Our links with both The Carers' Centre and the wider community means we can advise and signpost carers and tailor the support they need.  Moving forward, additional funding is hoping to allow for 1-1 support for carers and to offer post hospital support for the family as a whole.
