Claire's Story

Claire is a parent carer herself, and is registered with The Carers' Centre. She has personally experienced the benefits that being part of the local caring community can bring.

I see value in supporting the parent carer cafe in particular because I am a parent carer, and I know how valuable it is to have someone else to talk to who understands how you live.

As a family, we got a lot from The Carers' Centre, such as family days out and relaxing retreats. Because I am a service user, I know how much I got out of the events and I wanted to help others experience the same thing. After helping out at events, I felt like I had picked up new skills and wanted to put these to good use.

I want other parent carers to know that I do live your life too. I just want others to know we're here with them.

I wanted others to experience the same things I did, so I put through an expression of interest to become a volunteer. I have volunteered at other organisations before and you need to be prepared to have an interview and in some cases a DBS check. I found this completely understandable, as you'll sometimes be working with and supporting vulnerable people. Organisations need to make sure you are the right sort of person for this important role.

I see value in supporting the parent carer café in particular because as a parent carer myself, I know how valuable it is to have someone else to talk to who understands how you live. A lot of parents who have children with additional needs do not recognise the extra work they do and don’t see themselves as carers, just as parents, so it’s really important these people know that we, at the parent carer café, understand the extra challenges they face. They have a space they can go to to feel listened to, and supported.

I hope these places deliver any support and signposting parent carers need in a safe and relaxing atmosphere.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering?

I've been a full-time mum for the past nine years and now my children are both at school, I've found volunteering is a great way ease yourself back into meeting people and learning new skills. The Carers' Centre makes it easy to volunteer at events and activities that work around your schedule.
I would say to others who are considering volunteering to give it a go. You never know where it may lead, who you're going to meet and you'll be amazed at the skills you'll develop.
