Making the most of your home

Small changes can lead to big savings...

Adjust your thermostat

In cooler months, keep it at a comfortable but efficient level (18 - 20°C). In warmer months, avoid excessive cooling.

Circulation is key

Move furniture away from radiators or vents to let heat or cool air circulate freely.

Use curtains wisely

Keep them closed during hot summer days to block sunlight, and open them in winter to let in natural warmth during the day.

Cooler clothes wash

Lower washing machine temperatures and dry clothes outside when possible to reduce energy use in all seasons.

Use what's needed

Only fill the kettle with water you need - a small habit that adds up over time.

Consider batch cooking

Cook in larger portions and freeze meals for easy access. Reheat meals in the microwave to save on oven energy.

Other ways to get the most out of your home and appliances could include:

  • Fitting draught excluders to letter boxes and keyholes to keep cold air out.
  • Looking out for energy efficiency ratings of A or better when purchasing new appliances.
  • Defrosting your freezer regularly and keeping it as full as you can will save you money each year on running costs.
Understanding your energy tariff

Are you getting the best deal from your energy provider?

  • Regular meter readings ensure your bills are based on actual usage, not estimates.
  • Explore supplier options for dual fuel discounts – While convenient, a single supplier may not be cheapest.
  • Switch to direct debit payments – This spreads the cost over the year, helping you avoid seasonal bill spikes.
Checking your home's energy performance and accessing grants to help improve this

Find your home’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to understand areas for improvement. There are many grants available year round to help with insulation, heating, cooling upgrades, and other energy saving measures.
