Bath Abbey Memorials: Colonial Connections

Around 15% of Bath Abbey’s memorials have a connection with countries from the British Empire, including places in the Caribbean and India.

Each connection is a unique and interesting story which tells how and why British citizens lived and worked in far-flung places.

Enjoy refreshments and a presentation on some of the key names, such as:

  • William Baker who traded across the globe, was a founder investor in the East India Company and died leaving around £12 million at today’s rates.
  • Hannah Alleyne who lived in Barbados on a plantation for nearly all her short life but whose son John became a leading lawyer calling for the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

A tour of the memorials will follow, with the optional extra of listening to the Abbey’s new audio tour ‘Memorials & Empire’.

Please note that this tour will contain information that some people may find upsetting.
