Impact of caring in 2022/23

Across the UK, the impact of caring on the lives of unpaid carers has continued to increase.

The latest State of Caring survey, from Carers UK, showed that:

  • 21% of carers said they are struggling to make ends meet.
  • 25% of carers said they were cutting back on essentials such as food or heating.
  • 62% of carers agreed that the increased costs of living are having a negative impact on their mental or physical health.

"I cannot afford to worry but I am. I have to stay well to keep working and continue to care."

Many of these unpaid carers live here, in Bath and North East Somerset.

  • The 2021 census (ONS) identified 19,600 carers in our local area . This is 9% of our community.
  • Carers UK’s Valuing Carers report estimate the nominal value of unpaid care provided in Bath and North East Somerset to be £426m.
  • 5,415 unpaid carers in Bath and North East Somerset care for more than 50 hours per week.
  • The Carers' Centre has seen a 17% increase in referrals.
