When should you ask for help?

It can feel difficult to ask for help with debt, but whatever your situation, there’s support out there. If you answer "yes" to any of the following, it could be time to seek advice:

  • Worried about money or unable to pay bills on time
  • Relying on credit cards, overdrafts, or loans to get by
  • Missing payments or falling behind on your finances
  • Avoiding letters, emails, or calls from creditors
  • Feeling overwhelmed or hiding financial worries from family
What can you do right now?

Use a free benefits calculator

Tools like EntitledTo help you check if you’re eligible for extra financial support. Have these details ready:

  • Savings and income (including your partner’s)
  • Any benefits or pensions you’re already receiving (including anyone who is living with you)

If you need help using the calculator, please contact Charlie, our Energy Advisor.

Manage water debt

  • Contact your water company - unlike energy suppliers, they can’t disconnect your water supply.
  • Ask about social tariffs for low-income households or discounts for those on benefits.
  • Take simple steps to reduce your usage, like fixing leaks or using full-load cycles on appliances.

Understand more about prepayment meters and debt repayment

If you use a prepayment meter, it’s essential to know how repayment works. We can explain your options and ensure you stay on track.

Consolidate and manage multiple debts

If you owe money to several creditors, combining your debts can make repayment easier. We can signpost you to trusted debt agencies for tailored support.

Take steps to avoid future debt with energy and water companies

  • Talk to your supplier as soon as you notice difficulties.
  • Work out a manageable repayment plan.
  • Learn how to prevent arrears with advice tailored to your circumstances.
